IIHF Sends Russia 2026-27 Eligibility Back to Council — Iihf Hockey

iihf hockey took a turn on Friday when the International Ice Hockey Federation said Russia’s 2026-27 eligibility is being re-evaluated after an appeal overturned an earlier exclusion. The move leaves Russian national and club teams without a final ruling for the season and pushes the decision back to the IIHF Council.

Russia Appeal Hits IIHF Council

The Russian Ice Hockey Federation challenged the council’s last January decision not to reintegrate Russian teams for the upcoming season. Earlier this week, the IIHF Disciplinary Board annulled that move, sending the matter back for another review.

The federation said the previous decision could not be maintained in its current form, and the council will now re-analyze Russia’s case using safety, security, operational, and sporting plans. That puts the next step on a narrower track than a simple yes-or-no ban: eligibility will be judged event by event.

Belarus Sets One Example

Friday’s review came one day after the IIHF announced Belarus would be reinstated for three competitions during the 2026-27 season: the Under-18 men’s World Championship, the women’s Division 4, and the U-18 women’s Division 3B event. Russia and Belarus have been banned from IIHF-sanctioned competition since 2022, after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

That split result matters because it shows the IIHF is not treating every suspended program the same way. Belarus now has three locked-in entries, while Russia must wait for each event to clear the council’s review.

Russia’s Wider Tournament Path

Russia also missed the NHL’s 4 Nations Face-Off tournament in 2025, and its NHL players have not appeared in a Winter Olympic tournament since 2014, when the games were held in Sochi. Those absences sit alongside the current IIHF review and leave the country’s international schedule unsettled for 2026-27.

For teams and players tied to Russian hockey, the practical takeaway is simple: there is no blanket return yet. The council’s next ruling will decide participation one event at a time, using the four factors now at the center of the review.
