Williams Reopens $10 Billion IRS Case in Trump Irs Lawsuit Reopening

Judge Kathleen Williams reopened the trump irs lawsuit reopening on Friday, putting Donald Trump’s $10 billion IRS case back before the court to examine the settlement and claims of collusion. She ordered Trump’s attorneys to explain by 12 June how they respond to the allegations and whether the parties were truly adverse.

Kathleen Williams Order

Williams said the court is “empowered to investigate serious misconduct” and asked whether the case should be reopened because the court was the “victim of a fraud.” Her order also asks whether Trump colluded with his own government to settle the case “to avoid judicial scrutiny.”

The lawsuit was brought by Trump and his sons after their personal and business tax returns were leaked by a former contractor. Trump dropped the case last week, and Todd Blanche announced terms under which the United States would be forever barred from auditing the tax returns of Trump family members.

Trump Settlement Terms

Blanche also unveiled a $1.8bn fund to compensate people who claim they are victims of the federal government. Only Blanche signed the provision shielding the Trumps from IRS scrutiny, a detail Williams is now examining alongside the broader settlement.

A filing by lawyers for 35 former federal judges said the “purported ‘settlement’” raised “profound questions about the parties’ candor toward the court and manipulation of the judicial system, which threatens to undermine confidence in the administration of justice.” Their request pushed the judge to look more closely at whether the dismissal and settlement were used to avoid review.

June 12 Deadline

Williams had earlier questioned whether the lawsuit presented an actual conflict because Trump effectively controlled the IRS through the Treasury Department. Her latest order keeps the focus on the settlement itself, and on whether the court was misled when the case was dropped and the agreement disclosed.
