Helen Hunt Joins RSC's The Cherry Orchard Cast for 10 July Run
helen hunt has been cast as Madame Ranyevskaya in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s The Cherry Orchard, the latest move in a production that now has its full ensemble set. The new version of Anton Chekhov’s final play will run in the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon from 10 July to 29 August.
Branagh Returns After Three Decades
Kenneth Branagh will play Lopakhin, Bill Pullman will play Gaev, and Hunt joins a cast that had already drawn attention before the full list was released. The production pairs Laura Wade’s adaptation with direction by RSC co-artistic director Tamara Harvey, keeping the project firmly inside the company’s own creative lane rather than leaning on a one-name draw alone.
Harvey said, “Many of the cast are making their RSC debuts alongside Helen Hunt and Bill Pullman – Chumisa Dornford-May, following her incredible performance in Into the Woods, Esther Smith, whom I’ve long admired both on stage and on screen, and Sophie Stone, whose work I’ve loved since we first met at RADA.”
RSC Ensemble Around Hunt
Chumisa Dornford-May will play Anya, Alfred Enoch will play Trofimov, Esther Smith will play Varya, and Sophie Stone will play Sharlotta. The wider company includes Rob Alexander-Adams as Passer By, Michael Elwyn as Firs, Amber Gadd as Dunyasha, Guy Henry as Pishchik, Erin Siobhan Hutching as offstage understudy, Julian Moore-Cook as Yasha, and Andy Rush as Yepikhodov.
Harvey added, “It’s also wonderful to welcome back Alfred Enoch following our recent collaborations on Henry V and Pericles. And of course, a privilege to be working with Kenneth Branagh, returning to the RSC after three decades. I can’t wait to dive in.”
Stratford-upon-Avon Dates Set
The 10 July to 29 August run gives the company a defined summer window, and the full cast reveal turns the production from a headline booking into a fully staffed stage event. For readers tracking the RSC’s summer slate, the practical takeaway is simple: the roster is now set, the playhouse is the Swan Theatre, and the company has locked in its Chekhov lineup around Hunt, Branagh, and Pullman.
