Braxton Berrios Signs One-Year Giants Deal After Workout — Obj
Braxton Berrios signed a one-year obj deal with the Giants after the team brought in veteran wide receivers for a workout on Monday. New York needed help at wideout and in the return game after Gunner Olszewski suffered a season-ending Achilles tear on Friday. The move also came as Malik Nabers works back from an ACL tear last September.
Berrios Adds Return Value
Berrios gives the Giants a familiar utility option. In 2021 with the Jets, he was a First Team All-Pro, set career highs with 46 receptions and 431 receiving yards, and scored his only career kick return touchdown. Last season with the Texans, he played in four games, caught six passes for 37 yards and handled three punts and three kickoffs.
Giants Add Receiver Depth
The Giants were not shopping only one name on Monday. JuJu Smith-Schuster joined the workout group, and the team also looked at veteran wideout Anthony Miller before moving on Berrios. That tells the story of a roster trying to patch two jobs at once: snaps at receiver and a role on returns.
Odell Beckham Jr. also ended up joining the deal. The Giants drafted Beckham 12th overall in the 2014 NFL draft, and he spent his first five seasons with the club before leaving after the 2018 season. He won NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2014, made the Pro Bowl in each of his first three seasons, and earned Second Team All-Pro honors in 2015 and 2016.
Beckham Returns To New York
Beckham's addition gives the Giants another name with deep history in the building, while Berrios arrives as the cleaner roster fit for immediate depth. Beckham did not play in the NFL last season, but he did help the Rams win the Super Bowl after the 2021 season, finishing that playoff run with 21 receptions for 288 yards and two touchdowns.
For the Giants, the point is the same: one workout on Monday turned into two receiver additions, with Berrios set to cover the more direct roster need right away. Olszewski's injury stripped away a return option, and Nabers' status keeps the receiver room from settling into place.
