Villaraigosa Concedes as Alameda County Election Results Show Top Two Race
California voters cast ballots on June 2, 2026, and the alameda county election results were being tracked as the state’s governor primary began narrowing the field to the top two contenders. Early returns put Antonio Villaraigosa in last place among the top seven candidates, and he conceded as those numbers came in.
KTVU FOX 2 said it would begin tracking live primary election results as soon as polls closed at 8 p.m. The early count showed Villaraigosa with nearly 47,000 votes, far behind Republican Steve Hilton with roughly 848,000 votes and Democrat Xavier Becerra with roughly 838,000 votes.
California Governor Primary
The June 2 primary was set to decide which two candidates would move on in California’s governor’s race. Villaraigosa, a former mayor of Los Angeles, said, “Tonight didn’t turn out the way we hoped, and I offer my congratulations to the winners and offer my best wishes for the road ahead,” after the early results placed him at the back of the field.
Those early totals left Hilton and Becerra far ahead of the rest of the race and made the governor contest the central statewide count to watch as ballots were tallied Tuesday night.
Alameda County District Attorney
Alameda County voters were also choosing the next district attorney. That local race sat on the same ballot as the statewide contests, giving county voters more than one office to decide as the first results posted after 8 p.m.
The ballot extended beyond Alameda County as well. South Bay voters were deciding who would represent District 14, and San Francisco voters were casting ballots in the District 11 congressional race.
Matt Mahan And District 14
San Jose mayor Matt Mahan also conceded in his primary election night speech after receiving some 145,000 votes in early results. His race was part of the broader June 2 ballot that included congressional contests and the statewide governor primary.
Villaraigosa’s concession and Mahan’s speech gave the night a clear turn before the final count was done: early returns were already reshaping the field, and the top-two governor contest was moving ahead with Hilton and Becerra in front.
