Honda recalls 98,892 U.S. vehicles over Airbag sensor issue

Honda is recalling 98,892 additional vehicles in the U.S. for an airbag-related seat weight sensor issue. The expanded campaign covers some 17 different models and comes after an earlier 2024 recall.

Honda estimates only 1% of the recalled population will have the defect. Owners will be notified and told to take their vehicles to a Honda dealership, where the seat weight sensors will be replaced free of charge.

Honda's 2024 recall

The new action expands a recall Honda carried out in 2024, when it pulled 750,114 vehicles in the U.S. and 66,846 in Canada. The latest U.S. recall adds 98,892 units to that effort.

The defect starts with an electronic component in the circuit board of the front passenger's seat weight sensor. Honda said the component can crack when exposed to certain humidity levels.

Passenger airbag lights

If the component cracks, the front passenger's frontal and knee airbags may wrongfully deploy in a crash and injure the passenger. Honda said the SRS warning light may be illuminated if the vehicle is showing the issue, while the passenger airbag light may remain off.

That gives owners a specific check before a dealership visit: look for the warning light and the passenger airbag light, then arrange the free sensor replacement once they receive notice.

Canada and Transport Canada

Honda's expanded U.S. recall came while Transport Canada had not yet identified whether Canadian owners would also be subject to the larger campaign. For now, the documented fix in the U.S. is the dealership replacement of the seat weight sensors at no charge.
