Corpus Christi Cathedral Reopens Thursday After Nearly a Year
Corpus Christi Cathedral reopens on Thursday, June 4, after nearly a year of renovations, bringing parishioners back into the cathedral after an approximately one-year construction project. The Diocese of Corpus Christi has also invited the public to view the changes during the Feast of Corpus Christi celebration at 5 p.m.
Marc Cervantes said the cathedral is the centerpiece of the diocese and described the renovation as a beautification of the space inside and out. The work included new flooring, fresh paint, improved lighting and acoustics, and a new Chapel of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Corpus Christi Cathedral Renovations
The cathedral’s sanctuary apse is among the most striking changes, with gold, a crucifix and the altar area drawing attention in the redesigned space. Cervantes said, "I think for myself and I think for many, that this beautiful, apse area, the gold, the crucifix and especially the altar area, I'm hoping that draws everybody's attention to what's most important in the sacred space,"
The renovations were completed in approximately one year through what Cervantes described as a broad community effort. He said, "Because of the great effort of so many, both within the diocese — there's plenty of help from deacons, that work for individuals and companies, and fundraising efforts — all of that being a community effort led to what I think was just a rapid and transformative undertaking,"
Feast of Corpus Christi
The reopening gives parishioners access again to a central worship space after a long construction period, and it adds the Chapel of Our Lady of Guadalupe to the cathedral’s layout. The public invitation at 5 p.m. on Thursday pairs the reopening with the Feast of Corpus Christi celebration, giving visitors their first look at the finished work.
Cervantes said, "The Corpus Christi Cathedral is the centerpiece of the entirety of the diocese and so to see it beautified and dignified in this way both inside and out is gonna be very important,"
