Plans to Reverse Frogmore Cottage Renovations Stir Harry And Meghan Reportedly Furious Over Plans Reversing Cottage Renovations
Plans are in motion to reverse the roughly $3 million renovations made to Frogmore Cottage, and that has left harry and meghan reportedly furious over plans reversing cottage renovations tied to their former home in Windsor. The property has been empty for three years, after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle left it behind in 2020.
Frogmore Cottage in Windsor
The cottage was given to Harry and Meghan by Queen Elizabeth as a wedding present after their 2018 marriage, then became their home from April 2019 until March 2020. The makeover was initially funded by the Sovereign Grant, and Harry and Meghan later repaid the multimillion renovation bill in full after stepping back as senior royals in 2020.
Ingrid Seward, a royal biographer, said Frogmore Cottage was pretty dilapidated when the couple inherited it. The refurbishment covered the heating, electrical, gas and water main systems, and it took about six months to complete.
Three years empty
A source said, "It's been empty for three years," adding, "Even [former Prince] Andrew thought it wasn't good enough for him to move in." Another source said, "Maybe if they get rid of any trace of Harry and Meghan, then someone within the royal household will fancy it."
That same source said the plan would "draw the line under Frogmore Cottage's controversial history and return it to the pre-Meghan and Harry era." Hilary Fordwich, a British royals expert, said, "This clearly signals that once someone departs from duty, there are permanent consequences" and added, "There is no reason to preserve anything from the Sussex chapter."
Royal household decision
The reported reversal would not change the fact that the couple already paid back the renovation bill. It would instead move the Windsor property toward a new use after a three-year vacancy, while leaving the Sussex era at Frogmore Cottage open to removal rather than preservation.
The next step rests with the royal household’s handling of the property, after the reported plan to strip out the traces of Harry and Meghan and reset the cottage’s appearance. The only concrete marker now is the house itself: empty, repaid, and set for another turn.
