Perth Observatory tribute

Perth Observatory paid tribute on Thursday, calling him “one of the most respected and recognisable voices in aviation journalism”. It said he was generous with his time, encouraging to aspiring journalists, and always willing to share his knowledge.

The observatory added: “In an industry built around connecting people across vast distances, Geoffrey connected people through his storytelling, insight, and enthusiasm.”

The West Australian and Sunrise

Thomas spent many years as a long-time aviation writer and editor at The West Australian across most of its sections. He also built an audience through his own website and appeared regularly on Channel Seven’s Sunrise, where he became one of the leading aviation commentators.

That mix of print, digital and television work gave him reach beyond a single newsroom. Readers and viewers followed his reporting across different platforms, while younger journalists heard from a mentor whom Perth Observatory said was always willing to share his knowledge.

Karrakatta Cemetery June 17

A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held at Karrakatta Cemetery on Wednesday, June 17. The family’s description of his life as “a full life well lived” will frame that service for people who knew his work through the page, the screen or his own site.

For those who followed his aviation coverage, the next step is to attend the service if they plan to pay their respects, with Karrakatta Cemetery now the focal point for the farewell.
