Brooklyn Green Raises $146,317 for Maryellen Eron at Amc

Brooklyn Green raised $146,317 for Mary Ellen Eron, the 85-year-old worker at an amc theater in Maryville, Tennessee, after a viral video showed her on shift. More than 7,500 people donated before the fundraiser was paused, turning one customer’s post into a six-figure retirement push.

The clip has been viewed more than 13 million times and shows Eron hauling a heavy black garbage bag and pushing a cleaning cart during her shift. Green captioned the video, “Let’s secretly help retire this beautiful woman. No one deserves to work at this age,” then launched the fundraiser after seeing her working at the theater.

Green told WATE, “I knew nothing about her. I didn’t even know her name when I went to the theater,” and added, “I just decided that she was working so hard, and I aspired to be like her one day.” She also said, “Her physical appearance didn’t look too comfortable, especially since the way she was working so hard.”

45 Years at the Theater

Eron had worked as a movie theater staffer for 45 years before the fundraiser put her name in front of millions online. She also helps the homeless and her local church, which helps explain why the response moved so far beyond a routine tip or sympathy post.

The fundraiser started with a $200,000 target, but donations were paused at $146,317, leaving the campaign short of its goal even as the total crossed a level that few internet-driven appeals ever reach. The theater’s manager said it will be Eron’s decision when she retires, which keeps the next move in her hands rather than in the fundraiser’s.

Eron Sees the Total

On Wednesday, Green showed Eron the figures, and Eron said, “Oh my goodness. That’s a lot of money,” before adding, “Thank you so very much to all the wonderful people that have donated money to the GoFundMe.” She also said, “I’m overwhelmed and certainly blessed by the Lord and you wonderful people. Thank you once more.”

Green answered, “That’s a lot of money and you deserve every bit of it,” and that exchange is the cleanest read on this story: the campaign has already given an 85-year-old worker a path toward retirement, while the final decision still rests with the woman who kept showing up for 45 years.
