Mensik Opens 1-0 in Zverev Vs Mensik French Open Semi-final

Jakub Mensik led Alexander Zverev 1-0 early in zverev vs mensik at the French Open 2026 men's semi-final. The Czech 26th seed made a clean start at 1.30pm BST, taking the first game and putting immediate pressure on a player chasing a place in the final.

Mensik Starts Fast

Mensik held serve to open the match and set the tone in the first set. That mattered because Zverev entered the semi-final as the 2024 runner-up and had dropped only one set on his way to an 11th grand slam semi-final.

For Mensik, the opening game followed a run that has already carried him through some serious tests at Roland Garros. He beat Joao Fonseca in the quarter-finals after taking out Alex de Minaur and Andrey Rublev earlier in the tournament, and he arrived with two days off after that win.

Zverev’s Tight Madrid Win

The pair had met only once before this semi-final, in the Madrid last 16 last month. Zverev won that match 6-4, 6-7, 6-3, but Mensik had led by a break in the deciding set before the German turned it around.

That previous meeting gives the opening game more edge than a simple first-set point would suggest. Zverev has already shown he can recover against Mensik, but the Czech player came into Paris with a recent record that includes beating Novak Djokovic in three sets to win the Miami Open last year, his biggest title to date.

Mensik’s Big-Match Record

Mensik also beat Jannik Sinner in Doha this year, which added to the sense that he has been comfortable across from top names on big stages. His coach Tomas Josefus summed that up before the semi-final, saying: “I think Jakub is a player that was born for these types of matches, against big players in big stadiums”.

Andre Agassi offered a similar read on the matchup before play, saying: “They’re two guys with great backhands; I give them equal on the backhands. I give Zverev the advantage on serve, Mensik on the forehand. Mensik has nothing to lose and he plays better against better players. If Zverev is nervous and Mensik puts on some scoreboard pressure we may see some magic.”

The early 1-0 lead does not decide much on its own, but it puts the first pressure point on Zverev in a match that has already been shaped by how much both men have had to spend to get here. Mensik has played two five-set matches, while Zverev had spent four hours less on court at Roland Garros before this semi-final.
