The global entertainment community is reeling today following the confirmed death of James Handy, the legendary character actor known for his roles in Top Gun: Maverick and Jumanji. Handy, 81, was the victim of a violent targeted attack outside his residence in Tarzana, California, on Wednesday, June 3. Police have already taken a suspect into custody in what is being described as a "chilling" domestic tragedy.

Details of the Tarzana Incident

Authorities from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) responded to a distress call early Wednesday morning where they found Handy suffering from a fatal stab wound to the chest in the front yard of his home. Despite the rapid intervention of paramedics, the veteran actor was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

The suspect, identified as 44-year-old Michael Gledhill, reportedly flagged down responding officers and told them he was the person they were looking for. According to official police reports, the suspect—who is the son of Handy's girlfriend and lived at the residence—made several erratic statements to dispatchers at the scene, including, "I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin." Gledhill is currently being held on a $2 million bail on suspicion of murder.

"James Handy was more than just a face on the screen; he was a Vietnam veteran and a pillar of the character-acting community for nearly five decades," said a representative for the SAG-AFTRA.

A Career Defined by Versatility

Handy’s prolific career spanned over 140 credits, ranging from intense dramas to high-octane blockbusters. His presence provided a gravitas that made him a favorite for directors like Tony Scott and Joseph Kosinski. From his debut in Taps to his final role as Jimmy in Top Gun: Maverick, Handy was a staple of American television and cinema.
