Bill Bradley as Nearly 2,000 Watch Knicks Finals Game 1 at Rikers
Nearly 2,000 incarcerated people watched bill bradley’s Knicks in Game 1 of the NBA Finals at Rikers Island on Wednesday evening, a rare shared viewing inside one of New York’s most notorious jail complexes. The game came as the Knicks reached the Finals for the first time in 27 years, with a fan base that has not seen a title since 1973.
George R Vierno Center
The watch party took place in the George R Vierno Center, an 850-bed jail on Rikers Island and one of eight active facilities there. Inside the building, the Beacon Center included classrooms, a recording studio, a barbershop and other workforce-training programs, turning the evening into more than a simple screening.
Luis Guzman, an incarcerated person at Rikers, said the Knicks stand out because they are built differently. “You don’t have a team full of superstar players in the Knicks,” he said Wednesday evening. “It’s the chemistry and the teamwork that makes them great.”
Rikers Honors House
The setting carried its own restrictions and privileges. Correction officials described the housing unit as an honors house for incarcerated people who had gone at least 120 days without violence or disciplinary incidents, and many of the men watching the game had gone six months or longer without an infraction.
People in that honors house were allowed snacks and were allowed to remain out past the normal 9 p.m. lock-in. For them, the Finals offered a break from the usual routine while the city followed the Knicks’ return to the league’s biggest stage.
Luis Guzman on San Antonio
Guzman tied the viewing to the stakes of the series in plain terms. “This is the year they finally might get it done,” he said. “We will not lose at home.” He added, “All we got to do is take one down here.”
He also said, “If we take one in San Antonio, it’s over for San Antonio.” At Rikers, that optimism filled a room of people who were able to watch a Finals game together, past lock-in time, in a place where nearly 2,000 men were given a different kind of Wednesday night.
