Chileans Brace for Portugal Test Before Chile Vs Portugal

Chilean fans in Lisbon gathered before chile vs portugal on Saturday, and many did not hide their fear of a heavy loss. The mood around the plaza lisboeta of São Paulo in Cais do Sodré was shaped by Portugal’s status as a World Cup candidate and by Chile’s rebuild with a new generation.

Javier Osa in Lisbon

Javier Osa traveled from Miami with his wife and said he hoped the result would not be a goleada. He put Portugal among the contenders for the 2026 World Cup and warned that Chile might not be able to do much against it.

Guillermo Ignacio, who came from Barcelona, was even blunter. “Nos va a ganar Portugal, simple,” he said as the supporters gathered near the Tagus River.

Chile’s Mixed Expectations

The group included Amanda Badilla, Tomás Arriagada, Natalia Santos and Sebastián López, all Chileans living in Lisbon. Lucas Rojas made the trip from Rennes and said Darío Osorio gives hope for the future, while Sergio González described Chile as going through “al ser una generación nueva” and said the team will not be asked for so much.

Arriagada still predicted a 2-0 Chile win and said, “Siempre es lindo ver a tu país jugar en persona, y especialmente fuera.” He also joked about “ver a los portugueses sonriendo” and “ver a sus dos equipos,” while López described Chile’s role as “sparring.”

Portugal’s June 10 Turn

Saturday’s match is Portugal’s first preparation match for the 2026 World Cup, which will be played in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Portugal is scheduled to face Nigeria on 10 June after the Chile game, a short turnaround that leaves this meeting in Lisbon as one stop in a busy build-up.

For the Chileans who crossed cities and borders to be there, the trip already said plenty about the scale of the occasion. They came hoping to see their team compete, but several also arrived bracing for the kind of scoreline they would rather avoid.
