Zamtel and Ericsson Sign MoU for Private 4G, 5G in Zambia
Zamtel and ericsson formalised a Memorandum of Understanding during a visit by an Ericsson delegation led by Alain Maupin. The deal is aimed at private 4G and 5G connectivity solutions in Zambia, with a focus on businesses that need more secure and higher-performance networks.
Maupin-led Ericsson visit
The agreement was signed as part of a visit by Ericsson’s delegation, and Maupin headed that team in his role as Head of Eastern and Northern Africa at Ericsson. That makes the visit more than a courtesy call. It was the moment the two companies moved from general cooperation into a named plan for private network deployment.
Zamtel said the partnership is expected to support private network solutions across key sectors of the economy. The company said those systems are meant to improve operational reliability, increase efficiency, and support more automation and innovation inside enterprise environments.
Zamtel’s digital agenda
Zamtel said the collaboration fits its broader strategy to use strategic partnerships and emerging technologies to advance Zambia’s digital agenda. It also said the initiative will help build a more connected digital ecosystem for businesses and communities.
The company added that the effort will support national work to expand access to advanced communication infrastructure. Ericsson’s role is expected to bring global expertise in network technologies to the partnership, while the two organisations said they want to accelerate digital transformation and enable growth in technology-driven services in Zambia.
Private network rollout
For businesses, the practical takeaway is narrower than the headline suggests. This MoU does not yet spell out pricing, installation timing, or which sectors will get the first deployments. It does set the direction: private 4G and 5G are now part of a formal Zamtel-Ericsson push, not just a concept sitting on a slide deck.
Readers looking for an immediate service launch will need to wait for the rollout details that follow this agreement. The real change today is that Zamtel and Ericsson have put their names behind a private-network plan, and they are tying it to enterprise connectivity, national infrastructure, and Zambia’s broader digital push.
