Andoni Iraola Liverpool Appointment Ends Slot Era With Two-Year Deal
Andoni Iraola Liverpool appointment became official on Saturday as Liverpool installed the 43-year-old on a two-year deal after sacking Arne Slot. The move comes after a season that ended with 60 points, Liverpool’s lowest Premier League total since 2015-16, even though the club still qualified for next season’s Champions League.
Iraola Takes Over at Liverpool
Iraola arrives from Bournemouth, where he finished sixth and took the club into next season’s Europa League. Liverpool finished one place and three points behind them, a gap that makes the hire less about a fresh face and more about a reset after the title-winning Slot era ended abruptly.
The 43-year-old had already signaled his Bournemouth exit in April, and his departure this summer left him open for a move that had also linked him with Crystal Palace and AC Milan. Liverpool moved first and gave him the role they needed filled immediately.
Slot’s Title, Liverpool’s Drop
Slot’s removal carried a sharp contrast. He had guided Liverpool to the Premier League title a year before his sacking, yet the club’s 60-point finish this time was nowhere near enough to match that standard. They still made the Champions League, but the league return was their weakest since 2015-16 and left them 25 points behind champions Arsenal.
That drop explains why Liverpool turned to a coach who has just delivered Bournemouth’s best top-flight finish. Iraola also brings seven caps for Spain and a long playing career built mainly at Athletic Club, but the immediate job is far more direct: restore the level that disappeared after the title defense fell apart.
Iraola, Chiesa and Anfield
He spoke like a manager stepping into a heavyweight job with no time to settle. “Really excited, really excited,” he said after the appointment, adding, “Liverpool is Liverpool.” He also said, “I understand where I’m coming and what is expected.”
Iraola recalled Federico Chiesa’s late winner against Bournemouth at Anfield last August, saying, “[Chiesa] scored and the place erupted. It was crazy, no? I want now to feel this from the other side.” He added, “I want to do this as quickly as possible so I can also celebrate with them and I can be part properly of those celebrations.”
He is also understood to be keen to bring Tommy Elphick and Shaun Cooper into his coaching staff, a sign that the next part of the transition will reach beyond the dugout. Liverpool have already changed the manager; now the structure around him is starting to take shape.
