Divock Origi Scores 88th-Minute Winner Against Russia
divock origi said he scored in the 88th minute for Belgium against Russia at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Belgium needed a result to reach the Round of 16, and the goal came with about three minutes left in a nil-nil match.
Origi and Marc Wilmots
Origi said he was 19 years old when Marc Wilmots called him to say he was about to be called up to Belgium's national team. He said, "Hey, I’m about to call you up to the national team. I believe in you." Origi added that he had never trained with Belgium's first team before that call, and his mother was with him in the car when it came through.
Maracanã Pressure
The match against Russia was Belgium's second group game, and Origi said he came on for Romelu Lukaku before Eden Hazard laid the ball back for the finish. He described the scene at the Maracanã by saying, "And then you actually score in Pelé’s house."
Origi said the king and queen of Belgium were in the stadium, and he asked the king for a selfie after the match. He also said he saw his parents afterward and embraced them, with his mother in tears.
After the Final Whistle
The noise did not follow him back to the hotel. Origi said teammates came up to recruit him to their clubs after the match, and he quoted one of them asking, "Bro, you want to come to Atlético Madrid?!" He said the bus returned to the hotel, then the room went completely quiet after the celebration.
