Apple Drops iPadOS 27 Support for Older Ipad Models
Apple’s ipad software split gets sharper with iPadOS 27, which drops support for several iPad models that could run iPadOS 26. The newer release still brings a redesigned Siri, Liquid Glass changes, and faster app launches, but owners of older tablets will not be able to install it.
Apple’s iPadOS 27 cutoff
Apple says iPadOS 27 will ship with a new Liquid Glass slider, faster system animations, and apps that open up to 30% faster than they did with the previous releases. For people using an iPad that stays on the older branch, that means the device will not get the new interface controls or the speed gains tied to the release.
The company also says its most powerful on-device AI models in iPadOS 27 are limited to M4 or newer iPad models with at least 12GB of RAM. That splits the line even further inside the same software cycle, because some hardware can install the operating system while only the newest tablets can use the top AI features.
Security updates for older iPads
The sharp part of the change is that several iPad models compatible with iPadOS 26 will not be able to run iPadOS 27. Apple says those older iPads will still receive security updates, so owners are not being pushed into an immediate hardware dead end, but they will be left without the main feature release.
Apple’s iPadOS 27 support pattern also stands out beside iOS 27, since all iPhone models that run iOS 26 can run iOS 27. That makes the iPad cutoff the more selective upgrade path, especially for people who expected every device that handled iPadOS 26 to move forward together.
September 2026 release window
Apple said iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 will reach the public this fall, and the release is expected in September 2026. iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are also set to debut in September 2026, which puts the software cutoff and the next hardware cycle in the same window.
Owners of older iPads now have a simple decision to make when that rollout arrives: stay on the supported security-update track or move to newer hardware if they want iPadOS 27’s Siri changes, Liquid Glass controls, and faster app launches.
