Jonathan Dos Santos Leaves Club América After 3.5 Years

Club América made Jonathan Dos Santos’s departure official on Monday, ending his three and a half years with the club. The midfielder’s farewell came in an emotional video, and he said his time there was "el mayor reto de mi carrera".

Jonathan Dos Santos and Club América

Dos Santos addressed his teammates, the board, the coaching staff, the kit staff and the fans in the message. He thanked the people tied to his spell in Mexico after spending three and a half years with América and leaving at 36 years old.

His exit closes a run that tied him closely to the club’s recent success. He was one of André Jardine’s key players during América’s tricampeonato, with Liga MX titles in Apertura 2023, Clausura 2024 and Apertura 2024.

Zizinho’s América link

The farewell also carried a family link that shaped his move in the first place. Dos Santos said his motivation for joining América was to continue the legacy of his father, Zizinho, who played for the club in the 1980s and died a few months before Jonathan signed.

Rumors about a possible departure had circulated since this semester, and they grew louder after he cried at the end of the match against Pumas in the Clausura 2026 quarterfinals. América was eliminated by Pumas in that tie, and the club’s Monday announcement ended the speculation around his future.

For América, the move closes a chapter built around a player formed at FC Barcelona’s academy and used in Jardine’s title run. For Dos Santos, the farewell video leaves the strongest line in the story: he called his spell at the club "el mayor reto de mi carrera".
