Aho, Svechnikov Push Knights Vs Hurricanes Fight in Game 3

Knights vs Hurricanes got a jolt in Game 3, but Carolina still trailed two games to none in the Stanley Cup Final. Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov finally found the kind of touches the Hurricanes need from their top scorers, yet the series deficit left their rally short of a full breakthrough.

Aho And Svechnikov Stir Carolina

Aho set up two goals in Carolina’s third-period rally, a late burst that gave the Hurricanes a path back into the game. He still has not scored all series, so the assists were a step forward without finishing the job himself.

Svechnikov delivered the power play goal at the net front and tied the game at 4-4 with just under two minutes to play. That was his most direct mark on the night, and it came in the exact stretch Carolina needed one more finish from its top line.

Vegas Closed The Inside

Steve Peters pointed to how Vegas defended when he and Tyler Yaremchuk discussed Carolina’s top offensive players on Monday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE. “It does start with the Vegas Golden Knights and their defending.”

He said the Golden Knights kept Carolina out of the middle of the ice: “Their inability to get to the inside, because what Vegas does differently, Carolina’s a man-on-man and they’re very aggressive… For Vegas, they’re a zone, and they protect the front of the net.” Peters also said, “He’s a guy that can find those open areas usually around the slot to generate those shots.”

Carolina Needs More Space

The immediate issue for Carolina is simple enough. Aho has not scored all series, Svechnikov has not tallied at even strength, and the Hurricanes are still looking for enough production from the pair to swing the Final back in their favor.

Peters said the fix may have to come from the blue line as much as from the forwards. “They’re going to have to get their “D” more involved.”

He tied that directly to the two forwards, saying, “they need to have a little bit more room to work than they’re getting right now.” Carolina got signs of life in Game 3, but the next step is turning those touches into goals before the series slips further away.
