Manuel Neuer Extends Bayern Deal to 2027 in 2014 World Cup Return

Manuel Neuer has extended his FC Bayern contract to 2027 and is back as Germany's No. 1 goalkeeper, a reminder that the 2014 world cup winner is still shaping the national team picture. He has displaced Oliver Baumann and remains part of Germany's setup after four previous World Cup tournaments.

The contract runs another year to 2027, keeping the Bayern goalkeeper tied to the club as he enters the next stage of his career. Neuer was also absent from Germany's first pre-tournament test, a 4-0 victory over Finland, after a calf issue in the Bundesliga finale.

That absence did not change the larger pecking order. Neuer returned to the national team and took the No. 1 spot from Baumann, putting Germany back behind the same goalkeeper who started every match at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Brazil 2014

Neuer's run in Brazil still defines the standard attached to him. He kept four clean sheets against Portugal, the USMNT, France and Argentina, and Germany's Round of 16 win over Algeria needed extra time before a 2-1 finish.

Algeria produced seven shots on goal in that match, forcing Neuer to rush out of goal for last-ditch tackles and headers. Germany settled it in the 120th minute of injury time, and Neuer left the tournament with the Golden Glove award.

Germany's No. 1

The broader record is the reason the move carries weight. Neuer has played in the 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022 World Cups, making this latest return less of a surprise than a continuation of a career that has stayed central to Germany's plans.

For Germany, the immediate issue is not whether Neuer belongs in the conversation. It is whether the team can keep leaning on a goalkeeper who is still going strong and still good enough to push Baumann aside before a tournament begins.
