England and 3 Home Nations Enter World Cup Qualifiers Schedule Play-Offs
England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will all go into the world cup qualifiers schedule play-offs after Denmark, Spain and France joined Germany in qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup. The 4-0 defeat in Spain shut England out of direct qualification and pushed the four home nations onto the second-chance route.
Spain Reaches The Field
Fourteen of the 32 places are now taken, with 11 UEFA teams among them. Germany had already booked a spot before Denmark, Spain and France completed the latest round of qualifiers, while Australia, China PR, Korea R, Japan, the Philippines and Korea DPR have qualified from AFC and Brazil, Colombia and Argentina from CONMEBOL.
England's defeat carried immediate weight because it changed their path. Instead of going straight through, they now have to work through two play-off rounds to stay in contention for Brazil, the host nation for the 2027 tournament.
Zurich Draw And Play-Off Paths
The play-off draw will take place in Zurich, and the route is split into Path 1 and Path 2. Round one will pit Path 1 unseeded teams against Path 1 seeded teams, and Path 2 unseeded teams against Path 2 seeded teams. Round two then sends a Path 2 winner against a Path 1 winner.
England sit in Path 1 as a seeded team, alongside Norway, the Netherlands, Italy, the Republic of Ireland, Sweden, Iceland and Austria. Northern Ireland are in Path 2 as an unseeded team, while Scotland and Wales are seeded in Path 2. Hungary, Greece, Romania, Belarus, Kosovo, Lithuania, Croatia and Kazakhstan make up the Path 1 unseeded list, with Finland, Belgium, Turkey, the Czech Republic, Albania, Slovakia and Israel joining Northern Ireland in Path 2's unseeded group.
Four Home Nations Chase Two Chances
The play-offs will be played over two rounds, with seven play-off winners qualifying directly for the World Cup. The lowest-ranked play-off winner will move on to the FIFA intercontinental play-offs, so one team can survive the European route and still need another step to reach the final field.
For England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, the immediate task is simple: survive the draw in Zurich and then win twice. England had hoped to use the autumn for high-level friendlies against Brazil, the USA or Japan, but that plan now sits behind the need to navigate the play-offs first.
