Claude Corps and Anthropic back $200 million AI jobs research
Anthropic launched claude corps on Wednesday with an initial $200 million investment to study how AI is changing jobs and the economy. The company is pairing that fund with a policy conversation about what workers may need if AI reduces labor demand.
The money will go to an Economic Futures Research Fund. Anthropic says the fund will back research trials and program evaluation on public policies it considers promising. The company also said it is creating a $150 million national fellowship program to help early-career professionals extend AI benefits to communities across America.
Dario Amodei and job support
Dario Amodei, Anthropic’s CEO and co-founder, published an essay on his personal website on Wednesday. He said the government should promise economic support for people financially affected by AI.
Amodei proposed better data collection to track AI job displacement. He also proposed pro-employment policy incentives to slow or reduce displacement. He said mechanisms such as universal basic income could be used if job loss more permanently drives down labor demand.
Economic disruption at 5% and 10%
Anthropic paired the announcement with a policy framework for three levels of economic disruption caused by AI. It described scenarios in which the national unemployment rate reaches 5%, 10% and an unspecified unprecedented level, compared with 4.3% last week. In that most severe scenario, Anthropic said more permanent support would be necessary.
The company also listed basic income, sovereign wealth models and equity-sharing mechanisms as ways to generate and share revenue broadly. That is a more concrete posture than a generic call for AI optimism, but the fund’s exact research topics and grant targets were not spelled out.
OpenAI, Sanders and Trump
The announcement arrived amid broader industry attention to sharing AI-generated gains more widely. OpenAI outlined goals on Monday that included ensuring gains from the technology are widely shared, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently met with Sen. Bernie Sanders about a public ownership stake in AI companies like OpenAI.
On Wednesday, President Donald Trump said he will soon meet with executives from several leading AI companies to discuss giving back something to the public. For workers and policymakers, the immediate question is how much of Anthropic’s $200 million fund will move from framework building to actual support models for people whose jobs are displaced.
Anthropic has not detailed how the fund will be split between trials, evaluations and the fellowship program, and that allocation will determine whether claude corps becomes a policy experiment or a real test of labor-response tools.
