Alejandro Garnacho Told to Leave Chelsea as £40m Clause Looms
alejandro garnacho has been told he should be the player to leave if Chelsea decide to move someone on this summer. The recommendation lands after a difficult first season in west London and places his future back at the center of Chelsea’s squad planning.
Garnacho's Chelsea numbers
Last August, Garnacho joined Chelsea from Manchester United in a £40million deal. He finished his debut season with eight goals and four assists, but the split across competitions was uneven: once in 24 Premier League appearances and once in nine Champions League outings.
That record leaves Chelsea weighing whether to keep a winger they invested heavily in or use him as the most obvious exit if the club trims the squad. Xabi Alonso is set to become the new boss, and the decision now sits in his incoming workload.
Murphy backs Delap
Danny Murphy put Garnacho ahead of Liam Delap when asked who should leave. “If one was going to leave, I think it would more likely be Garnacho than Liam Delap,” he said. He added: “Delap is a young lad, and he brings some characteristics that Chelsea don’t have. He’s different to Joao Pedro so I think Xabi Alonso will give him a crack.”
Murphy also said: “I think Alejandro Garnacho has struggled, and the fans haven’t taken to him.” That is the sharpest public read on why the winger has been singled out again after arriving from Manchester United only last summer.
Manchester United's sell-on stake
There is a financial wrinkle built into any sale. Manchester United kept a 10 per cent sell-on clause after failing to get the £50m they initially wanted, so any future transfer fee would send a slice back to Old Trafford. Garnacho remains under contract until 2032, which gives Chelsea more than a short-term decision to make if they decide he is the player to move on.
For Chelsea, the next step is simple: decide whether Garnacho is part of Alonso’s plans or the name most likely to be sacrificed. If he goes, the move would not just reshape the wide options in west London; it would also deliver a cut of the fee to United.
