Tiffany Butler Arrested in Welfare Fraud Case Involving $50,525

Tiffany Butler, a 31-year-old from Sprakers, was arrested on June 11 and accused of welfare fraud after Montgomery County authorities said she illegally collected more than $50,000 in SNAP benefits. Investigators allege she failed to report all people living in her household and all employment and earned income.

Authorities said Butler received $50,525.00 in SNAP benefits she was not entitled to between August 2022 and June 2026. She was being held pending arraignment in City of Amsterdam Court.

Montgomery County case

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, the Department of Social Services and the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office took part in the investigation. The case centers on allegations that Butler did not report household members and income information used to determine benefit eligibility.

Those allegations led to eight counts of offering a false instrument for filing in the first degree and one count of welfare fraud in the second degree. The charges put the focus on the paperwork submitted to keep benefits in place over nearly four years.

City of Amsterdam Court

Butler was held pending arraignment in City of Amsterdam Court after the arrest. For people who receive SNAP benefits, the case shows how county investigators can review household and earnings records over time and bring criminal charges when filings do not match reported eligibility information.

The arrest marks the start of the court process for Butler, who faces nine total counts tied to the alleged overpayment. The arraignment will move the case from investigation to the first court appearance on the charges.
