Gabriel Rincones Jr Joins Phillies Triple-A Outfield Options
Gabriel Rincones Jr. is now part of the Phillies’ Triple-A Lehigh Valley answer if an outfielder has to be replaced, and that puts his name directly into the club’s immediate depth chart. The move comes as Adolis García was pulled from Wednesday’s 7-4 win over the Toronto Blue Jays after making a throw and was later described as dealing with a right shoulder issue.
Phillies outfield depth at Lehigh Valley
The Phillies could turn to Otto Kemp, Felix Reyes, Rincones, Bryan De La Cruz or Dylan Carlson at Lehigh Valley if García or another outfielder misses time. They do not have another major-league-ready everyday outfielder in the organization, which leaves the group at the top level more exposed if the current mix gets thinned out.
Steward Berroa took García’s spot in right field after the throw that ended the inning for him. The club was set to evaluate García further after the game, and that evaluation now sits at the center of any short-term outfield move.
García and the right field workload
García’s availability matters because he has handled 563 of 606 1/3 innings in right field, a workload that has kept him near the center of the Phillies’ outfield planning. Justin Crawford has started only four of the last 13 times the Phillies have faced a lefty, another sign that the club has already been managing the outfield with some platoon use.
That is where Rincones fits. He could form the strong side of a potential platoon down the line, which gives the Phillies a more specific minor-league option than a generic call-up. The club’s outfield ranks 30th in the majors in FanGraphs WAR, so any stretch without García would force the Phillies to lean harder on depth pieces rather than a stable everyday answer.
Rincones and the wider roster picture
The Phillies’ current run since Zack Wheeler returned has helped cover other issues. They are 29-13 since he was activated from the injured list, a pace that projects to 88 wins, but that record does not change the outfield math if García needs time off.
Rincones’ place on the list matters because the Phillies are not looking at one isolated injury note. They are looking at an outfield group that already required matchup management, and the list of Kemp, Reyes, De La Cruz and Carlson shows how quickly the organization would have to choose between minor-league bats if the major-league corner spot opens up again.
