Karpathy Declares Vibe Coding Obsolete with Agentic Engineering

Andrej Karpathy says vibe coding is obsolete, and he now points to agentic engineering as the next phase. The shift changes what one person can build, because the model is not just following prompts anymore.

He gave vibe coding its name in February 2025. By February 2026, he had moved past it and described the newer workflow as the one that matters now.

Karpathy and Anthropic

In May, Karpathy joined Anthropic to rebuild its pretraining research team from the inside. That move put him closer to the systems work behind the products he is now describing, not just the public language around them.

Vibe coding meant typing what you wanted in plain English and letting the model build it. Agentic engineering goes further, because the model writes the code, runs the tests, reads the errors, fixes the code, runs the tests again, and reports back when something is shipped.

A Week to a Day

The source says that workflow can cut a feature-building cycle from a week to a day. For teams under deadline, that changes the rhythm of shipping more than the marketing language around AI coding does.

The claim is already spilling outside hobby projects. In May, PYMNTS reported that vibe coding had crossed into regulated banking, and one US neobank shipped a customer-facing feature built entirely by an agent.

Internal Tools in an Hour

Harvard Gazette also covered researchers using agentic engineering to build small internal tools. The scientists there write a brief, hand it to an agent, and pick up the working tool an hour later.

That is the friction point in Karpathy’s argument. Vibe coding was useful for landing pages in an afternoon and prototypes in a weekend, but agentic engineering raises the ceiling on what one person can build and changes what one person can charge for.

The unresolved question is how widely that pace holds once the work leaves a controlled team, since the sources do not give a broad deployment figure for agentic engineering outside the examples already described.
