Michael Oliver Replaced for Ecuador World Cup Match in Philadelphia

Michael Oliver was pulled from the Ecuador world cup match against Ivory Coast before kickoff in Philadelphia. FIFA replaced the Premier League referee with Francois Letexier after a minor injury, and Oliver is expected to be available again in the coming days.

Francois Letexier Takes Over

The switch changed the officiating crew for Group E in the small hours of Monday morning. Stuart Burt and James Mainwaring were also removed from the line, while Cyril Mugnier and Mehdi Rahmouni were called in alongside Letexier.

Oliver had been due to handle his first World Cup game. That assignment would have added to a resume built across the top level in the Champions League, World Cup 2022 and Euro 2024.

Oliver’s Tournament Record

He has been an international referee since 2012 and joined UEFA’s Elite Group in 2018. Those dates track the rise of a referee trusted for the biggest stages, which is why his absence for Ecuador against Ivory Coast landed as a late change rather than a routine swap.

The replacement also removed two UK officials who were set to work the lines in Philadelphia. The match stayed in Group E, but the crew around it changed before the teams kicked off.

Philadelphia Crew Shift

Oliver said two years ago that pressure and competition are higher at major tournaments, and that officials spend plenty of time preparing to limit mistakes. For this match, that preparation now belongs to Letexier’s team, with Oliver expected back for the next round of group matches.
