Nick Woltemade Starts First World Cup After TS Woltmershausen Beginnings

Nick Woltemade is playing for Germany at his first World Cup. For TS Woltmershausen, the moment reaches back to the boy who first came through its doors at age four and played there until he was eight.

TS Woltmershausen and Woltemade

Marvin Bergmann, the club’s 1. Vorsitzende, called him the biggest footballer the club has produced. He also said, “Er war ja nur vier Jahre hier, aber wir waren sein erster Klub, hier fing es an.”

That path began in Woltmershausen near the Weser, where Woltemade played football and handball near his family in 2007. By age eight, SV Werder Bremen had noticed his talent, and he later moved on to be developed there.

Bergmann on the boy he knew

Bergmann said Woltemade stood out early because he scored at a high rate. “Nick hat einfach herausgestochen damals, weil er Tore am Fließband geschossen hat. Er war eine Tormaschine,” he said.

He also described a child who was quiet off the field. “Ich habe hier einige Jungs, die sind ziemliche Draufgänger. Nick war genau das Gegenteil. Er wollte nicht im Mittelpunkt stehen,” Bergmann said. In another anecdote, after a youth match that ended 8:0, Woltemade said his scoring total did not matter, only the team result did — before Bergmann later learned he had scored all eight goals.

Werder Bremen to Germany

TS Woltmershausen says Woltemade was its first player to become a licensed professional, and the DFL thanked the club in 2021 for its outstanding support of him. That recognition now sits alongside a World Cup appearance for Germany, a jump that traces directly back to a local club in Bremen.

About a year before the article, English media and the asked Bergmann for an interview when Woltemade moved from VfB Stuttgart to Newcastle. Bergmann said he told Woltemade the club did not want to exploit his fame, and Woltemade replied that he had no problem with that.
