Canada Earns 1-1 Draw in Group B World Cup Debut
Canada left its group b world cup debut with a 1-1 draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina on Friday, and the point landed as a milestone for the program. Cyle Larin’s second-half goal pulled Canada level after Bosnia-Herzegovina had struck first.
That result gave Canada a historic World Cup point in its first match at the tournament. It also came after a long stretch in which Canada were the better team, but the early spell of control did not turn into an immediate lead.
Cyle Larin Changes the Match
After about 20 minutes, Canada began to take over. At one point, it had nine corner kicks to Bosnia-Herzegovina’s one, a gap that showed how much the game tilted toward the home side without immediately changing the scoreline.
Then Bosnia-Herzegovina scored on its one corner kick. Maxime Crépeau allowed the goal, leaving Canada to chase the match despite the pressure it had built.
Toronto Stadium Turns Red
Larin’s second-half finish gave Canada the equalizer, and Promise David celebrated with him afterward. The response inside Toronto Stadium matched the mood around the team: people in red outnumbered people in blue by about 10-1.
Even at halftime, the crowd could not get a singalong to “Summer of ’69” going, a small sign that the night was more tense than festive. Will Arnett was among the people at the stadium as Canada tried to turn control into a result.
The draw leaves Canada with a point that did not exist before kickoff, and that is the part that will travel farthest. For a World Cup debut, it was the kind of result that changes the baseline for what comes next.
