Ryan Walsh says 110 medical incidents were handled at Kmbc Weather event
Ryan Walsh said the medical response team at kmbc weather was ready for the opening-day crowd in Houston’s East Downtown, where more than 30,000 people were in the area serviced by the Emergency Medical Center on Thursday. Organizers reported 110 medical incidents as temperatures climbed during FIFA Fan Fest.
Walsh, the CEO of the Harris County Sports Authority, said, "We were ready for what happened. We did have some medical emergencies we responded to — we were well within the capacity within the medical people on site. Most of them were treated on site". Four people were transported to a hospital for heat-related concerns requiring a higher level of care.

On-site treatment took several forms. Officials said 85 people were treated at the cooling center and returned to the festivities, while 27 people were treated at the on-site Emergency Medical Center and 21 of them were released. The event also had five mist stations, along with cooling stations, hydration stations, shade structures and air-conditioned spaces.
Bashil Patel, with MistCooling, said, "These are not A/C systems — they are dependent on the air temperature and humidity levels — but the goal is for you to be comfortable when you are standing underneath without getting wet". After Day 1, crews lowered the mist nozzles by about two feet to improve coverage.
Festivalgoers and heat
Festivalgoers also described their own precautions. Linda Pham said, "We take frequent breaks, drink water, Powerade". Haley Arteaga said, "I feel great and I brought my reusable water bottle, and you always want to make sure you stay hydrated".
Mercedez Soliz said, "I also brought a mini umbrella — very travel friendly. I also brought a towel in case I wanted to sit, because I know turf feeling on the butt is not a good feeling when you are hot and sweaty". Health officials on-site urged people who stepped under a mist station and still did not feel relief, stopped sweating, felt dizzy or felt nauseated to contact Houston Fire EMS immediately.
Heat response at FIFA Fan Fest
The opening day showed how quickly the festival’s crowd and weather pushed medical staff into action. With more than 30,000 people in the area and 110 incidents recorded, the practical test for organizers was whether the on-site setup could keep most cases out of the hospital, and Walsh said it did stay within capacity.
For attendees, the message from the first day was straightforward: use the cooling areas, drink consistently, and do not wait if the mist stations are not enough. The response now centers on whether the adjustments made after Day 1 will spread the relief more evenly across the grounds.
