Maduka Okoye Delivers Two Big Saves Against Portugal

maduka okoye has turned Nigeria’s goalkeeper battle in his favor with two strong displays against Portugal and Poland. His saves against Portugal kept Nigeria in the game and put pressure on Stanley Nwabali’s path back into the Super Eagles setup.

Okoye Takes The Shirt

Okoye seized the number one jersey in Nwabali’s absence, and he has backed it up with two impressive performances. Against Portugal, he pulled off world class saves that stopped Nigeria from losing control of the match.

That run matters because Nigeria has not had Nwabali available since January, when he was sidelined from the national team setup after the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Since then, Okoye has moved into the role and made the most of the opening.

Nwabali’s Long Absence

Nwabali had been a major figure in Nigeria’s third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, including a standout display against Egypt in the bronze medal match. He later left Chippa United by mutual consent after four years at the club, but he has remained a free agent despite links to clubs in South Africa and Tanzania.

He has not been called up to the Super Eagles since the tournament ended. During Nigeria’s match against Portugal, he hosted a social media live session and said, “It's not everybody that will keep. A lot of players need to play also.”

Chelle’s Goalkeeping Choice

Coach Eric Chelle is likely to stick with Okoye for the foreseeable future, and the recent form gives him little reason to change. Okoye’s work against Portugal and Poland has made the starting job his to lose, while Nwabali’s route back depends on breaking back into a setup that has already moved on without him.

For Nigeria, the immediate question is selection, not sentiment. Okoye has the shirt, the saves, and the momentum.
