Tony Popovic Secures Extra Year Before Australia’s Turkiye Opener

tony popovic will stay on as Australia coach for an extra year, with the contract extension set on the eve of the Socceroos’ World Cup opener against Turkiye. He took over in September 2024 and now remains in place through the Asian Cup 2027, with his immediate focus fixed on the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Popovic Keeps Australia Stable

Australia’s deal gives the national team continuity at a point when the next month carries real weight. Popovic said: "I'm delighted that I will continue to coach the Socceroos through to the Asian Cup 2027." He also said: "My absolute focus right now is on the FIFA World Cup 2026."

The extension arrives after Australia qualified as runners-up in AFC third-round Group C behind Japan. That campaign included a 1-1 away draw and a 1-0 home win against Japan, with the only loss a 1-0 home defeat to Bahrain.

Australia Faces Turkiye First

Australia opens against Turkiye on Saturday in Vancouver, then has group matches against the United States and Paraguay. Popovic said: "I'm proud to lead my country into a World Cup, but most importantly, I want to ensure that our team is fully prepared and focused on our group matches against Turkiye, the United States, and Paraguay."

This will be Australia’s seventh World Cup appearance and sixth straight. The team has never gone beyond the round of 16, reached that stage at the 2022 World Cup, and has lost 10 of its 17 matches across the last five tournaments since 2006. Australia has also lost its opening game in five of six World Cup appearances, with the only opening win coming in a 3-1 victory over Japan in 2006.

Kugeler Backs the Extension

Football Australia CEO Martin Kugeler called the timing ideal, saying: "Securing Tony's contract extension on the eve of the World Cup is a fantastic outcome. Tony is a world-class coach, and he has proven his ability to deliver results while developing talent at the same time." He added: "Tony's positive impact on the Socceroos and Football Australia has been clear, from securing direct qualification for the World Cup for the first time in 12 years, to building out the depth of the squad and laying the foundations for future success. We can see the growing excitement among Socceroos fans."
