George Russell Takes 2026 Barcelona-catalunya Grand Prix Pole in 1:14.679

George Russell opened the 2026 barcelona-catalunya grand prix from pole on Saturday afternoon with a lap of 1:14.679. Lewis Hamilton was 0.064 seconds behind in Q3, and the front row was set after a last-minute flying lap that left Russell with the advantage.

That lap continued a qualifying pattern for Mercedes. Through the opening seven rounds, Kimi Antonelli has four poles and Russell has three, leaving the two drivers to split the top spot as the season has built toward Barcelona.

Hamilton Falls Just Short

Hamilton landed beside Russell on the front row after the final run in Q3, but his lap came up 0.064 seconds short. Max Verstappen outqualified Isack Hadjar, while Lando Norris joined Antonelli on the second row.

Oscar Piastri qualified seventh, Liam Lawson eighth and Niko Hulkenberg ninth. Russell’s margin was small, but it was enough to put him at the front when the field lines up for the race.

Leclerc Hits the Turn Four Barrier

Charles Leclerc’s session ended early when he crashed into the barriers at turn four on his first qualifying lap in Q3. He said, “I'm okay,” and added, “Apart from feeling very ashamed of coming here to speak in front of the camera after.”

He called it “Another, what if.” Leclerc also said, “Unfortunately, last week was the same, with what if we didn't have that issue this weekend, is what if I didn't make that mistake?”

Before the crash, Leclerc had posted the second-fastest time in Q2, but the barrier hit left him 10th on the grid. He said, “And yeah, I just felt ashamed of not being, putting everything together on what was a very positive weekend.”

Behind Leclerc, Arvid Lindbald, Gabriel Bortoleto, Pierre Gasly, Oliver Bearman and Carlos Sainz were knocked out after Q2 and will start 11th through 16th. Estaban Ocon, Alex Albon, Sergio Perez, Valterie Bottas, Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso were eliminated in Q1.

For Russell, the pole gives him the first slot on the grid and keeps Mercedes at the sharp end of qualifying. For Leclerc, the mistake turned a strong Friday pace into a recovery job from 10th.
