Brown Germany: David Raum hints at start against Curaçao
Brown Germany has a live lineup battle at left-back, and Nathaniel Brown is now in line to start against Curaçao. David Raum praised the 28-year-old’s season and left open the possibility of a change for Germany’s World Cup opener.
Raum on Brown’s rise
“He had an outstanding season, even though Eintracht Frankfurt struggled,” Raum said to Sky Germany. He added that Brown “fought his way into our team.”
That is the clearest sign yet that the left-back spot is open. Raum, who has had some physical problems lately, said he is getting fitter all the time, but Brown’s form has pushed the competition into the open before the first match.
Germany left-back competition
Raum did not frame the contest as a one-man job. “We're very well-staffed in that position. If I'm not playing the team can still rely on me. The coach therefore has a wealth of options,” he said.
That gives Germany room to choose between experience and the player who appears to be taking the nod now. Brown is set to start against Curaçao, which would make the opener the first real test of how the left side settles under tournament pressure.
For Brown, the immediate change is simple: he is no longer just competing for minutes. He is being pushed toward the starting role, while Raum has made clear the team can still lean on him if the coach changes course.
