Masayoshi Yokoyama Explains Tupac Approval for Stranger Than Heaven Japan Game
Masayoshi Yokoyama says japan game Stranger Than Heaven included Tupac Shakur only after a step-by-step approval process with his family and estate. The reveal put RGG Studio's cast choices under the kind of scrutiny that comes with using a rapper who was murdered 30 years ago.
Yokoyama said the team first built the idea around Snoop Dogg's real-life relationships, then worked outward from there. He also said Snoop Dogg plays Orpheus, a key character in the game, and that Tupac's name came from Snoop's side during those talks.
Snoop Dogg Set The Cast Plan
Yokoyama said the studio discussed the concept with Snoop Dogg before moving further. He added, “Initially, we talked to Snoop and we said, 'We have this character, we need to fill this role. Who do you think would be a good role for that?” That approach matters because it shows the cast was assembled through a relationship-driven process rather than a simple cameo list.
He also said, “There's actually a lot of characters who have a relationship to Snoop in the game that we haven't announced.” That leaves Stranger Than Heaven with a larger cast structure than the reveal itself showed, and it suggests Tupac is only one piece of a broader network built around Snoop's orbit.
Tupac's Family And Estate
Yokoyama said, “The next step for us was we had to talk to both his family and his estate and negotiated and got everyone's approval, so once we were clear, we were able to move forward with it.” He said the studio wanted to make sure the depiction was respectful to Tupac's legacy and did not want to recreate who he was when he passed away.
Instead, the team wanted to envision who Tupac might be now, 30 years later. Yokoyama said, “We wanted to try to envision who Tupac might be now, and we did this with the full approval step by step.”
Stranger Than Heaven Cast Pressure
The pressure on RGG Studio is obvious: Stranger Than Heaven is a new action game from the developer behind the Like a Dragon/Yakuza franchise, and the Summer Game Fest 2026 Showcase cast reveal made Tupac one of the most scrutinized names in it. Yokoyama also said the studio was aware of the ongoing battle between Tupac's family and music executive Tom Whalley over Tupac's likeness rights.
That puts the game in a narrow lane. The studio has already said it moved carefully, but the real test is whether the finished portrayal matches the approvals it says it secured and the respect it says it was aiming for.
