Jordan Staal Ties Five-Game Mark — Nhl Playoffs 2026

Jordan Staal tied the NHL record for the longest goal streak in a Stanley Cup Final at five straight games, and Carolina now leads the 2026 Stanley Cup Final 3-2 after five games. In nhl playoffs 2026, that puts the Hurricanes captain at the center of the Conn Smythe Trophy race as Game 6 approaches Sunday at 8 p.m. ET.

Staal’s five-game run

Staal became the fifth player ever to score in five consecutive games in a Stanley Cup Final, joining Yvan Cournoyer, Jean Beliveau, Maurice Richard and Cyclone Taylor. He scored two goals in Game 4 at Vegas, then kept the streak alive as Carolina pushed ahead in the series.

The 37-year-old also became the third-oldest player to record a multigoal game in the Cup Final at 37 years, 272 days. Only Mark Recchi, at 43 years, 125 days in 2011, and Igor Larionov, at 41 years, 187 days in 2002, were older when they did it.

Carolina’s scoring edge

Staal’s case is built on more than the streak. He leads the Cup Final in high-danger goals with five, high-danger shots on goal with 13 and scoring chances with 18 through the first five games. Of those 18 chances, four became goals, nine forced Carter Hart to make saves, four were blocked and one was missed.

He also leads the series in shots on goal with 17 and ranks second in power-play goals with two. Through five games, he has three power-play points, while Carolina has gone 6-for-16 on the power play and Vegas is 2-for-15.

Jarvis, Ehlers and the Final

Staal has spent much of his 14 seasons with Carolina as a versatile third-liner, but his current line with Seth Jarvis and Nikolaj Ehlers has driven a surge at the right time. He had four power-play goals and no power-play assists in 75 regular-season games, and over the past four regular seasons combined he totaled five power-play points.

That contrast is sharp. Staal has eight goals this postseason, and seven have come from high-danger chances. In the Cup Final, five of his six goals have been high-danger goals, which has turned a veteran forward into Carolina’s most important finisher at the exact moment the series is tilting its way.

Vegas faces Game 6

Carolina’s 3-2 lead gives Staal and the Hurricanes one chance to close out the series Sunday night. Vegas has been held to 2-for-15 on the power play, and the gap in special teams has matched the gap in Staal’s production.

The next game will decide whether his five-game streak ends with a title or keeps the Final alive long enough for another chance at the record all by itself.
