Trump Kennedy Center Fund created after Jfk name removal

The Kennedy Center created a Trump Kennedy Center Fund after a court order required jfk name to come off the building. The board approved the new endowment at a Thursday meeting, then filed an emergency appeal and removed the name this weekend to comply with the ruling.

The fund is meant to support the center’s private endowments and its $257 million in federal funding. A Kennedy Center official said the center remains under Donald J. Trump’s chairmanship, even as the building itself now carries no Trump name after the court order.

Thursday board vote

The board established the new endowment in President Trump’s name at Thursday’s meeting of trustees. It also voted unanimously to acknowledge the president’s contributions to the center by all legal means, according to the facts provided. Roma Davari said, “The establishment of the Trump Kennedy Center Fund is intended to recognize President Donald J. Trump's significant contributions and dedication to America's premier cultural center, while furthering our founding mission like never before.”

A Kennedy Center official described the fund as “a landmark commitment to securing the future of the nation's preeminent performing arts institution and its enduring legacy of artistic excellence.” The same official said Trump will retain his role as chairman of the board.

D.C. District Court order

The name change came after a D.C. District Court judge ruled last month that the Kennedy Center’s board acted unlawfully when it added the president’s name and made plans for two years of closure and renovations. The judge ordered Trump’s name removed from the building by June 12, and the administration’s last-minute request to stay that injunction pending appeal was rejected.

The board also voted on Thursday to file Friday’s emergency appeal to stay the ruling. In a court filing last week, the administration argued that if it had to revert to the original name, it would have to refund donations made to The Trump Kennedy Center.

Joyce Beatty lawsuit

Democratic Rep. Joyce Beatty sued the administration last year over the name change and closure. After the name came down this weekend, she called the appeal an “11th hour gambit” and said, “Today's victory is the beginning of returning the Kennedy Center to the American people.”

Beatty added, “The rule of law prevailed, and that is worth celebrating.” Roma Davari said the center remains “fully compliant with the court's directive while we evaluate legal options regarding the Board's unanimous vote,” leaving the fund in place even as the legal fight continues.

The practical effect for the center is immediate: the name is off the building, the board has created a Trump-named endowment, and the dispute now turns on whether the appeal can alter the court-imposed deadline or force changes to the fund tied to the center’s private money and federal support.
