John McGinn Leads Scotland Past Haiti 1-0 in Football Scores Return
Scotland beat Haiti 1-0 in Boston to open their World Cup Group C campaign, and John McGinn’s first-half goal settled it. The result pushed Scotland top of Group C after the opening round and gave them their first World Cup victory in 36 years.
McGinn Breaks the Deadlock
McGinn scored the only goal of the game in the first half, and Scotland spent the rest of the match protecting a lead they could not afford to lose. Steve Clarke had called it a must-win game, and the finish from his midfielder gave Scotland the start they needed.
That single goal carried extra weight because Scotland had not scored in the World Cup since Craig Burley netted against Norway in 1998. It was also Scotland’s first World Cup finals win since 1990, and only their fifth victory ever in the competition.
Scotland Top Group C
Brazil’s 1-1 draw with Morocco changed the shape of the group as well. With that result sitting alongside Scotland’s win, Clarke’s team moved to the top of Group C after one round of matches.
Scotland now head into games against Brazil and Morocco with a better position than the one they faced before kickoff in Boston. Clarke said, “The next two games against teams inside the world's top 10 will be tough games. But obviously we go into them with a little bit less pressure than everybody put on us going into this game.”
Clarke Sees Experience
After the match, Clarke praised the response from his squad and pointed to the way they handled the moment. He said, “I'm tired but absolutely delighted with my players; resilience, character, everything about this group of players had to be on the pitch tonight and it was.”
He added, “Not relief. Everyone told us it was a must-win game and we won the game. If it is a must-win game and you win, I think you can be happy with yourselves.” Scotland’s first victory in a World Cup finals in 36 years came with that pressure attached, and the performance gave them a foothold in a group that still includes Brazil and Morocco.
