M53 closed between Hooton and Bebington after 3:25 AM crash
The m53 was closed in both directions between Junction 5 at Hooton and Junction 4 at Bebington after a crash reported at about 3:25 AM on June 15. Merseyside Police shut both carriageways and sent forensic collision investigators to the scene.
National Highways said the closure would remain in place for “several hours.” Diversion traffic quickly built up in Bromborough, Eastham and Bebington, while the disruption hit the Monday commuter rush across the regional transport network.
Merseyside Police on the M53
Police closed both the northbound and southbound carriageways near the Clatterbridge interchange after emergency services were alerted to the collision. They also asked witnesses travelling on the M53 during the early hours to contact police and quote reference 97 of June 15.
The closure covered the stretch between Junction 5 at Hooton and Junction 4 at Bebington. That left the route blocked in both directions at the start of the working week, when traffic was already moving through surrounding roads.
National Highways and diversions
National Highways initially reported no severe congestion on the immediate approach to the closure. The pressure shifted to nearby roads as drivers diverted away from the motorway, creating bottlenecks in Bromborough, Eastham and Bebington.
For drivers heading across the area, the practical change is immediate: the motorway link is unavailable between the two junctions, and the alternative routes are already carrying the displaced traffic. Anyone with information about the crash can pass it to Merseyside Police using reference 97 of June 15.
