Jordan Cox Set for England Test Debut Against New Zealand

Jordan Cox will make his England Test debut in the second Test against New Zealand on Wednesday. The Essex batter was named in England's XI on Monday, and the move comes during a wider shake-up driven by injuries and suspensions.

Cox Returns After 2024 Setback

Cox would have played in New Zealand in 2024, but he broke his thumb in the build-up. This time he arrives after 204 from 201 balls for Essex against Leicestershire over the weekend, a reminder of the form that pushed him back into the frame.

Brendon McCullum said Cox had been preferred at number seven in Ben Stokes' absence because of his power and his rounded game. England also left James Rew on standby to replace wicketkeeper Jamie Smith, underlining how quickly the selection picture has shifted around the top and middle order.

England XI Shifts Again

The XI named for the second Test also includes Jofra Archer, Matthew Fisher and Sonny Baker. Baker will also make his England Test debut, while Fisher will play his second Test more than four years after his first.

Fisher's only previous Test came in the West Indies in 2022, and Baker arrives with 22 wickets in six County Championship matches this season. McCullum backed the Hampshire fast bowler by saying, "I think the country is going to be behind him because he plays games a little bit like Mark Wood".

He added of Baker: "He's got good air speed, he swings the ball, he's got great skills, but he charges in and he's got wild celebrations and you can just see that cricket is what he wants to do." England left Ollie Robinson out with soreness in his right knee, while Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson remained out of the squad pending an investigation after they were present when a member of security staff was struck by a Saracens rugby player following the team's midnight curfew breach.

Second Test Selection Pressure

England did not pick a spinner in the second-Test XI, and the changes leave Jamie Smith in place despite his partner being due to give birth to their second child in the coming days. For Cox, the immediate step is simple: make the debut count in a side that has already been forced into multiple changes before the first ball is bowled.
