Spain Opens 25,000-Simulation Favorite Edge in España Vs Cabo Verde
España vs Cabo Verde opened with Spain carrying the weight of Opta's numbers and the edge of a reigning European champion. On June 15, Spain met Cabo Verde in its World Cup debut, and the model made La Roja the top title pick out of 25,000 simulations.
Spain and Cabo Verde meet
Opta gave Spain a 15.96% chance to win the World Cup, ahead of France at 13.28%, England at 10.18%, Argentina at 9.96% and Portugal at 7.98%. It also projected Spain to beat Cabo Verde in 87.2% of its simulations, with a draw at 8.1% and a Cabo Verde win at 4.8%.
The matchup carried more than ranking pressure. Spain entered as FIFA's second-ranked team and stretched a 31-match official unbeaten run into the tournament opener, while Cabo Verde arrived as the 67th-ranked side and was making its first World Cup appearance.
Luis de la Fuente's opener
Luis de la Fuente had all 26 players available after Nico Williams, Lamine Yamal and Víctor Muñoz recovered from their discomfort. He called Cabo Verde the most important match, and he was direct about the favorite tag: "No es un hándicap ser favorito, pero, ¿somos más favoritos que Francia, Brasil o Argentina?"
He added another line that fit the opening-day stakes: "El partido más importante es el de Cabo Verde". That is the tension in this debut — Spain arrived with the strongest projection in the model, but the first task was still the one in front of them.
New Jersey on July 19
Opta's tournament forecast pointed to July 19 in New Jersey as the date and place for the champion to be crowned. Gianni Infantino brushed aside the model with his own line at the World Cup launch events: "¿Lo dice Opta? Pues si lo dice Opta..."
For Spain, the opening assignment in Atlanta came against an opponent with no previous World Cup history and no prior meeting on record between the two sides. The numbers put La Roja ahead, but the match itself had to answer whether that edge held when the tournament began.
