Fontana Chooses Anguissa Over Kevin De Bruyne
Gaetano Fontana put Frank Zambo Anguissa ahead of kevin de bruyne, saying he would choose the Napoli midfielder “without a doubt” in a direct comparison between the two. The verdict lands as Anguissa heads into the final year of his Napoli contract and continues to draw transfer interest.
Fontana’s Anguissa Verdict
“Anguissa, all my life. Because he's a complete, versatile player, capable of playing in both phases of the game.” Fontana also said: “Tactically, he integrates perfectly with the other midfielders and interprets modern football in the best possible way. Looking at Napoli's recent history, I believe he's one of the players who best adapts to any coach's ideas.”
He closed the comparison with a direct nod to De Bruyne: “De Bruyne is an extraordinary champion, but a player of his experience must bring added value to the team. I've played under coaches whose ideas differed from mine, but that doesn't mean I'm not fulfilling my duties. On the contrary, a champion must find a way to improve what's around him. For this reason, if I had to choose, I'd choose Anguissa without a doubt.”
Anguissa’s Napoli Contract
Anguissa signed permanently for Napoli in 2022 after first arriving on loan, and he now enters the final year of that deal with his future under scrutiny. The midfielder has 67 caps for Cameroon and 24 European appearances, two figures that help explain why his name has stayed in circulation as clubs weigh whether to move now or wait.
Italian reports last month linked him with a return to the Premier League, while Sunderland have been named as a target and AC Milan are monitoring his situation. AreaNapoli reports that Sunderland would have to offer around 20m for him, with negotiations over a fresh contract said to be on hold.
Sunderland And Milan Interest
That leaves Napoli facing a choice point on one of its most adaptable midfielders. Anguissa is being priced as a player with immediate value in the market, and Fontana’s preference only adds weight to the idea that Napoli may be protecting an asset rather than settling his future right away.
For Sunderland, the reported 20m figure sets the starting point for any serious move. For Napoli, the stalled contract talks mean Anguissa is already inside a year that could define whether he stays in Serie A or becomes one of the summer’s more watched midfield decisions.
