Coudet Cuts Matías Viña, Kendry Páez From River’s Plans

Eduardo Coudet has cut matías viña and Kendry Páez from River’s second-semester plans. The decision means both players are set to leave after the World Cup as River pushes to trim payroll and free money for reinforcements.

Coudet and Pablo Longoria

Coudet’s call was made together with sporting director Pablo Longoria. River is moving in that direction because it wants to reduce its wage bill and redirect funds toward signings, with the two World Cup players now outside the club’s plan for the second half of the year.

Páez, 19, arrived on loan from Chelsea and did not reach 50% of River’s official appearances during the semester. He played 461 minutes in 14 matches, scoring one goal and adding one assist.

Páez’s Chelsea Loan

The loan agreement runs 18 months until June 30, 2027. Chelsea also has a buyback option in June and another in December, giving the English club leverage over the midfielder’s future even as River moves on from him now.

Viña’s case is more straightforward. The 28-year-old left back joined River in January on loan from Flamengo, and the club paid 500,000 dollars for that deal. He played 881 minutes in 14 matches before River and Flamengo agreed to terminate the loan after the World Cup.

Viña’s Flamengo Exit

For River, the next step is clear: the squad gets smaller, the wage bill drops, and space opens for new arrivals. For the two players, the separation will come after their World Cup run ends, with their situations already resolved inside the club’s second-semester planning.

River has chosen the cleaner roster path. Páez’s limited minutes and Viña’s underwhelming return left little room for them once Coudet and Longoria settled on a squad reduction built around new spending power.
