Alec Bohm Sits Out Phillies Lineup in Monday Opener

Alec Bohm was out of the Phillies lineup Monday night against the Miami Marlins, getting a day off in the opener of a three-game series at Citizens Bank Park. The move was tied to recovery, not a longer absence, as the club manages a third baseman who has been playing through accumulated soreness.

Mattingly on Bohm

Don Mattingly said Bohm was "healthy but banged up." He said the third baseman had gathered "nicks and bruises" during the road trip, with "a little bit in the hammy, a little bit in the hip, and a little bit in the shoulder."

Mattingly’s plan was simple: give Bohm a day, let him recover, and have him back out there Tuesday. The decision keeps the lineup flexible at the top of the series, but it also signals the team is choosing rest over forcing through the wear that built up away from home.

Trea Turner Stays Second

Trea Turner remained in the No. 2 spot, and Mattingly said he did not consider giving him a day off. That held even after Turner went 1-for-13 on the latest road trip and entered Monday batting.219 with a.599 OPS.

Mattingly was direct about his trust in Turner, who won the National League batting title a year earlier. He said, "He’s Trea." He also added, "So for me, I’m not giving up on Trea. I’m not moving him right now. That’s just the way I feel about it."

Phillies Keep Three Catchers

Monday also brought a roster move elsewhere: Steward Berroa was reinstated from the paternity list and optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The Phillies continued to carry three catchers, with J.T. Realmuto starting, Rafael Marchán as the primary backup, and Garrett Stubbs as the third catcher.

Mattingly said the club had not really talked about reducing that group. Stubbs has just four at-bats in the last calendar month, but the Phillies kept him because he can do multiple things and they are still comfortable with the way the roster is built.

For Bohm, the immediate takeaway is straightforward. The rest day is designed to get him back into the lineup Tuesday, while Philadelphia enters the series opener with one regular out, Turner locked into the two-hole, and the bench and catching depth left unchanged for now.
