Shore Fire Reaches 25% Containment Near Calimesa — Fire Map
The Shore Fire fire map showed the blaze at 2,600 acres and 25% containment by 10 a.m. Tuesday after it broke out Monday in the Badlands southwest of Calimesa. State Route 60 westbound reopened at the Interstate 10 interchange after an overnight closure.
Cal Fire said the fire was first reported at 3:23 p.m. Monday near Lake Shore Drive and San Timoteo Canyon Road. By then, the fire had already reached 1,500 acres with zero containment, and an evacuation order plus nine evacuation warnings had been issued.
Lake Shore Drive and San Timoteo Canyon Road
The Riverside County Fire Department sent multiple engine and hand crews from the county, Hemet Fire Department, Palm Springs Fire Department and Cal Fire-San Bernardino County. Flames were moving at a moderate to rapid rate northward amid gusty afternoon winds, and Cal Fire requested a Very Large Air Tanker Monday afternoon.
By 4:20 p.m., two Cal Fire water-dropping helicopters and five air tankers had begun runs on the fire. The evacuation order came at 6:15 p.m. for an area with scattered residential and commercial properties on the perimeter of the fire bordered by San Timoteo Canyon Road and the Moreno Valley Freeway.
Officials said portions of Beaumont were under the evacuation warning zone, while an evacuation center was set up at Valley View High School in Moreno Valley. Large animal intakes were available at the San Jacinto Valley Animal Campus in San Jacinto.
Westbound SR 60 Reopens
Motorists were told to expect delays and remain alert for firefighters, law enforcement personnel and heavy equipment operating in the area. San Timoteo Canyon Road between Redlands Boulevard and Lake Shore was ordered closed, and the westbound 60/10 interchange shut down Monday night before reopening later.
Officials said residents and motorists may continue to see smoke and occasional flare-ups within the area because interior hotspots and pockets of unburned vegetation are still smoldering inside the established fire perimeter. The fire’s cause was not immediately known.
