Sander Berge Emerges as Manchester United’s Cheaper Midfield Option

Manchester United are considering Sander Berge as a cheaper midfield option this summer, with the Fulham midfielder now in their frame for one of two central midfield additions. The move would give United a 28-year-old Premier League player who has already started 34 of 38 league matches last season and fits the No.6 role they are trying to fill.

Manchester United And Berge

United’s search points toward a player who has already been on their list before. They considered Berge in 2024, when he left Burnley for Fulham, and the Norwegian is back in view as the club look beyond more expensive alternatives.

That matters because West Ham are still demanding £80million for Mateus Fernandes, while United are also set to add Ederson from Atalanta in a £38million move. Berge sits in a different bracket, and that gap is why he has become a realistic option.

Fulham’s Contract Position

Fulham are likely to want a profit on the £25million they paid two years ago, and Berge remains tied to Craven Cottage until 2029. The club also hold a one-year option to extend that deal to 2030, which gives them leverage if United decide to push forward.

He is not arriving on the back of a short spell either. Berge spent three-and-a-half years at Bramall Lane before moving to Burnley and then Fulham, giving him the kind of Premier League mileage United are seeking in their midfield rebuild.

Berge’s Fit At No.6

The appeal is practical. Berge would fit the No.6 role at United, and his last season backs that up: he started 34 of Fulham’s 38 Premier League matches. For a side seeking two central midfield signings, that kind of availability is part of the selling point.

He also arrives with a wider reputation. Albert Stuivenberg described him as “intelligent”, and Vincent Kompany used the same word about him. Berge was also called up to Norway’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, adding another layer to a summer in which his name has moved back into United’s conversation after the false 2020 claim that he was heading for a £20million move to Old Trafford.

United now face a simple choice: pay up for a more expensive target, or move for a midfielder who is already settled in the league and available in a deal that should sit lower than the names above him. Berge’s profile gives them that option, and Fulham’s contract position means the price will not be light.
