Rex Heuermann Faces Sentencing After Guilty Plea to Eight Killings
rex heuermann is being sentenced Wednesday in Riverhead, New York, after pleading guilty in April to murdering seven women and admitting in court that he killed an eighth victim, Karen Vergata. The hearing follows his 2023 arrest and moves the Gilgo Beach serial killings case into its final court phase for now.
Heuermann said he murdered eight women, strangled his victims and dismembered some of the bodies. Family members of the victims are expected to address the court.
Riverhead sentencing
Heuermann’s April plea resolved charges tied to seven women and added Karen Vergata to the case after he admitted killing her in court. He has remained largely silent through multiple court appearances since his 2023 arrest.
Asa Ellerup, his ex-wife, and their two grown children said they would not attend the sentencing. Their absence leaves the courtroom focus on the victims’ families and the sentence that follows the plea.
Gilgo Beach remains
The case drew attention after investigators started finding remains along Ocean Parkway in 2010 while looking into the disappearance of Shannan Gilbert, whose death was ultimately ruled accidental. Most of the women disappeared between 2000 and 2010, and most of their remains were found on a desolate parkway not far from Long Island’s Gilgo Beach.
Sandra Costilla’s remains were found in 1993 in the Hamptons, more than 60 miles away, and Karen Vergata’s remains were found in 1996 on Fire Island, more than 20 miles east of Gilgo Beach. Those locations show how the case stretched beyond a single stretch of shoreline and into multiple parts of Long Island.
Victims' families
The sentencing brings together a case that unfolded over years, with unconnected disappearances eventually linked through remains found across different places and time periods. For the families expected to speak in Riverhead, the hearing is the first court proceeding to follow Heuermann’s guilty plea to eight killings.
