Lineker Questions Tuchel's Lewis Hall Call in England World Cup Squad
Gary Lineker questioned Thomas Tuchel’s decision to leave Lewis Hall out of the england world cup squad, saying the Newcastle United left-back’s omission was hard to understand. Hall was not included in the 26-man group traveling to the United States, despite featuring in two friendlies before the final selection was made.
Lineker on Hall
Lineker said Hall had been brilliant this season and added that he had been the only player he had really seen cope with Lamine Yamal this season. On The Rest is Football podcast, he said: "I found Lewis Hall’s omission hard to understand, I really did."
He also framed the decision as one of several places where he differed from Tuchel. "It certainly surprised me but I would say that everyone has their own view on this and pretty much everyone will differ from the England manager in one or two positions. All that matters really is what the England manager thinks, but there are a few things I can’t understand," Lineker said.
Tuchel's selection calls
Tuchel said Djed Spence was the second-choice left-back, a choice that left Hall on the outside despite his run of form for Newcastle United during the current Premier League campaign. Tuchel also turned to Dan Burn for veteran leadership in the center of the backline, signaling that the final 26-man squad was built around balance as much as reputation.
Lineker did not stop at Hall. He said he was disappointed about Cole Palmer because Noni Madueke had an okay season but plays second fiddle to Bukayo Saka most of the time, and he added: "I think Harry Maguire was really unlucky."
England's 26-man group
The omissions leave England’s squad with different options in wide areas and at left-back as the team heads to the United States. For Hall, the immediate change is simple: he is out of the 26-man group, even after earning a look in two friendlies and drawing public praise from one of England’s most recognizable former strikers.
