Gary Lineker Questions Tuchel Over Lewis Hall Exclusion

gary lineker said Thomas Tuchel’s decision to leave Lewis Hall out of England’s 26-man World Cup squad was hard to understand. The former England striker also backed that view with praise for Hall’s form and said he was disappointed by other omissions from Tuchel’s final selection.

Lineker on Lewis Hall

Lineker did not hold back on Hall’s absence. He said, “I think there were a couple of standout ones for me. Everyone would choose a different squad and there’s only one opinion that counts but I found Lewis Hall’s omission hard to understand, I really did. He’s been brilliant this season. Tuchel has talked about Djed Spence being the second-choice left-back but he’s more of a right-back and he spoke about his pace if we come up against a really quick winger. But Lewis Hall was the only player I’ve really seen cope with Lamine Yamal this season. So I found that decision a little bit baffling.”

Hall had featured in friendlies against Uruguay and Japan, but Tuchel still left the Newcastle United left-back out of the squad for the tournament in the United States. Lineker’s objection centered on that gap between Hall’s recent involvement and the final cut.

Tuchel’s squad choices

Tuchel has said squad selection is about putting a team together rather than picking the most talented players, and Lineker said he understood that approach even while disagreeing with several calls. He also said he was disappointed about Cole Palmer missing out, noting that Tuchel selected Noni Madueke instead among England’s wide options.

Lineker’s comments went beyond one left-back decision. He said, “I was disappointed about Cole Palmer because Noni Madueke had an okay season but he plays second fiddle to Bukayo Saka most of the time. Cole gives you something different he’s a moment player. Also, if we rewind 12 months he was the player of the tournament at the Club World Cup where this tournament is being played. Yes he’s been injured a lot this season but he was out in patches and I think he showed that sharpness in Chelsea’s last few games and was coming back into form.”

Maguire and Burn debate

Lineker also said Harry Maguire was “really unlucky” to miss out. Tuchel chose Dan Burn to provide veteran leadership in the heart of England’s backline, and Lineker said he suspected the manager would not pick both because they are similar players in many ways.

That leaves Tuchel with a squad built around his own balance judgment, not a straight talent list, and it puts his choices under public scrutiny before England begin the World Cup. For Hall, Palmer and Maguire, the message from the final squad is simple: strong club form and recent appearances did not guarantee a place.
